Cages and crates for your pet

Cages and crates for your pet
A dog cage or crate can be a valuable tool for training
your pet. A cage or crate should never be used as a
punishment but when used correctly it is a safe and
comfortable place to be.

When you first get a new puppy you will want to have a
place to leave her when you are away from home. You will
want a cage where the puppy can curl up and avoid forming
bad habits.

If you do not have a cage or crate and the puppy gets into
trouble while you are gone, she will be confused about why
you are irritated when you return home. If you come home
and the puppy has torn up a blanket or chewed on your
favorite pair of shoes, you will probably be angry. The
puppy will not realize what the problem is and may think
she is being punished for something else entirely.

Most puppies will not use their cage as a place to go
potty. This is another good reason to have a cage or
crate. You will not have to worry about the puppy going to
the bathroom on the floor while you are not at home.

Cages are a good way to keep the puppy safe when you are
working, taking a shower or doing the laundry. You can
also keep your puppy safe in a cage while you are
traveling. It is not a good idea to have a puppy loose in
a vehicle. She may get caught under your feet or try to
climb on your lap while you are driving.

You should not use a crate for punishment. Your dog should
not be put in her cage for hours at a time because you are
too busy to spend time with her. If you do not have time
to play with your puppy and exercise her, it may not be the
right time to get a puppy.

Those who work outside the home should not plan to leave a
grown dog in a cage or crate for longer than eight hours.
A puppy should not be left that long because she will need
to go to the bathroom ever three or four hours. If you are
going to be gone longer than the suggested times you may
want to consider a dog walker who can take the dog or puppy
out for exercise in the middle of the day.

Using a dog cage or crate can be a positive experience for
your puppy if it is used correctly.
